Rick Cecco has made the trek to Romania the last three years to race what is arguably the most difficult ATV race in the world, dubbed CFMoto Hunt-the-Wolf. Most other types of ATV race builds, both here in the US and around the world, typically focus on making the ATV faster, stronger, and lighter. HTW is a bit different in that the race lasts over a period of several days, and the terrain in many cases is barely passable. So, that being said, building a machine to traverse terrain that's tough to walk on, let alone drive an ATV across is not for the faint of heart. Careful consideration must be given to products that are both strong and maintain maximum durability. Keeping the machine as light as possible is certainly a goal, but it isn't the most important thing. Having had the honor of lifting Rick's Renegade up to shoot photos of the underside, the term "lightweight" would be highly inaccurate!
Rick Started with a stock 2015 Can Am Renegade 1000 and began the transformation from there. Surprisingly, much of the final race machine remains stock. A trip down the starting line of a GNCC event will show machines that are wildly more modified than a CFMoto Hunt-the-Wolf machine. That being said, those ATV's only need to survive for two hours. Also, by using as many stock parts as possible, it becomes much easier for racers to source repair parts to get through the event when the wear and tear of competition catches up. Even the exhaust is stock to help keep noise levels down to respect both the landowners and wildlife. For the sake of reliability, the engine remains totally stock. Surprisingly, so does the chassis, clutches, a-arms, shock bodies, and the steering stem.
Below is a breakdown of the parts Cecco used to modify his HTW machine, as well as the contact information to build your own. Put down the bag of tater chips, dock your remote, and get out in the garage and get started on your own bomb-proof machine!
