If you’re in or near Polk County, Wisconsin, you’ll be happy to know that the county opened a new ATV/UTV intensive-use recreation area this month. Set on 60 acres of forest land in the town of Grantsburg, the location welcomes everyone to enjoy three dedicated courses for beginners, intermediate riders, and advanced pilots, as well as a sand pit. Even the novices shouldn’t be bored, the beginner track designed with banked corners and small jumps. At the other end, the veterans on the Challenge Course will get to find their way over riprap (small rock obstacles), logs, and tires as well as big ramps and jumps.
The County Board of Supervisors gets credit for the boon. Four years ago, the board was looking for recreational ideas for county parks and trails. Advisors made more than 30 suggestions, 13 got the nod, becoming the Polk County Comprehensive Network Trail Plan. The board said it took the 700-acre Dyracuse Recreational Park three hours away in Nekoosa, Wisconsin, as inspiration for the smaller Sterling facility. Funding came from the state’s Department of Natural Resources (DNR) through the DNR’s ATV/UTV Trail Aids grants, similar to how Pennsylvania’s Department of Conservation and Natural Resources funded a huge trail expansion for the Piney Rail Riders.
