Vemar VRX7 Helmet - Thrashed

I was first drawn to the Vemar VRX7 helmet because of its slick appearance and creative design work. Manufactured in Italy, the helmet features hand-laid graphics under a thick layer of UV protective clear coating, which is not only stylish but helps resist fading and scratching. This helmet meets U.S. DOT specs as well as the motorcyclist-specific European Union spec, which in my opinion gets this helmet off to a good start. Some important features to know about the VRX7 is that the exterior shell is constructed of an incredibly strong carbon fiber/aramidic/fiberglass blend and features a double-density high-impact inner shell. As you would expect with any decent helmet, the inner liner is removable and washable, but what's interesting is that it's manufactured from a special fiber that provides long-life treatment against odor, fungus and bacteria.

The overall quality of this helmet is top-notch with lots of attention paid to the details such as a grooved area for lining up your goggle strap and well-placed ventilation. When I first picked up the helmet, I was pretty blown away by its feathery lightweight. Vemar claims this helmet to be only three pounds, which is pretty incredible and is due to the lightweight materials used in construction. After a long ride, you don't feel as if your head is carrying around dumbbells. The fit is where things really become serious as it's one of the most important factors to consider when purchasing a helmet. The VRX7 has a little bit of a different fit than some of the other helmets on the market. It pressed tightly against my cheeks and felt snug against the crown of my head. It's important to note that not everyone's head is shaped the same. For me, this helmet seemed to fit like a glove. Although $450 would be a significant investment, I would feel pretty good about purchasing this helmet for myself, and with a five-year warranty from the manufacturing date that would pretty much seal the deal. -_Thad Josey_
