Review: Leatt GPX 5.5 Helmet

Generation Next.

Our initial test of the Leatt took place during and all day ride on hot and humid trails. We were happy to have the high airflow benefits of the GPX during the day and the results of a light weight helmet afterwards.Hoppen World

In the ATV Helmet world there hasn't been a whole lot of extreme advancements in the last couple decades. Sure, they have more venting, some have cooler shapes and lots of graphic choices but that's about it. A couple years ago Leatt changed all of that and introduced the new $449.99 GPX 5.5 to the power sports world. The difference, is the 10 percent smaller shell has a multi density foam molded directly to the shell to significantly reduce G-Forces. Additional, the GPX has emergency cheek pad removal, is handsfree hydration ready, has an adjustable, breakaway visor and of course is comparable with Leatt's variety of neck braces.

Seven intake ports bring air into the channels of the helmet liner and six ports let it out. Four more big windows allow for even more flow.Leatt

According to Leatt, the smaller outer shell volume benefits you by reducing the rotational acceleration of your head and brain in the case of a crash. Their multi-density, V-shaped impact foam is molded directly to the outer shell, making it possible to reduce the outer shell size and achieve the highest level of impact protection at the same time. The protection inside is provided by 360 degree turbine technology which is a 3D molded Armourgel material. Additionally, Leatt’s GPX is one of the lightest DOT/ECE approved helmets you can buy at 2.85 pounds. We have seen one HJC helmet this light, and Klim’s massive air flow helmet is nearly a pound heavier. Leatt does have a carbon shell helmet known as the GPX 6.5 that is slightly lighter than the 5.5 and has a retail price of $599.99.

Slipping the helmet on, you instantly notice how light the helmet is. Our head and neck thanked us at the end of a long day of testing. We wore a Large size and it fit as well as other brands and the padding inside was super comfortable with no spots to complain about.Hoppen World

What we really noticed was the venting. This helmet has huge honey comb hole areas at multiple points around the helmet providing great airflow even at slow speed. We literally felt like we were wearing a mountain bike helmet using the GPX. The wide goggle port held every brand google we tried very well. The helmet has seven intake vents, six exhaust vents and the four larger honeycomb breathing windows that don’t allow the helmet to trap heat. Leatt did consider cold weather riders too and has a $39.00 winter kit that features vent blocks and a soft chin bar mask.

Along the bottom of the helmet, in the very center, you can see the port for a hydration tube that offers hands free operation.Leatt

To say the Leatt GPX helmet is possibly the most comfortable helmet we have every road with world be a true statement. It’s light, has massive airflow and feels very thin yet protective at any speed.

The huge eye port fits larger goggles with ease.Hoppen World
