Best ATVs for Hunting

It takes more than camo to impress us.

There are camo ATVs, and then there are ATVs outfitted for hunting.Polaris

When used correctly, ATVs are a highly useful tool for the hunter. This is especially true when it comes to wild game retrieval. Where legal, ATVs can be used rather than larger vehicles to access tighter locations for retrieving a kill. An ATVs overall weight leaves a smaller footprint than that of an SUV, or even a UTV. And the ability to shift rider weight makes them more maneuverable on the off-camber side of a foothill.

It’s easy to dip an ATV in the latest flavor of Realtree camo and label it a hunting rig, so we took this list a few steps further to include ATVs equipped with additional features that benefit those who use ATVs for hunting.

When it comes to hunting ATVs, the Polaris Sportsman XP 1000 Hunt Edition leaves nothing to be desired.Polaris

Polaris Sportsman XP 1000 Hunt Edition

This ATV comes with front and rear brush guards, a gun scabbard, Kolpin Ratchet Claws, front and rear rack extenders, and 26-inch all-terrain tires supporting 11.5 inches of ground clearance. The XT-R doesn’t come in camo, but it does come with features that make game retrieval a little easier.Yamaha

Yamaha Grizzly EPS XT-R

The Grizzly is one of the more compact and highly maneuverable ATVs on this list, making it the perfect go-getter for retrieving game in a tight spot. The 686cc does not lack for power, and Yamaha’s Ultramatic transmission is possibly the most responsive CVT on the market today. The handlebar-mounted On-Command system provides selection between 2WD, limited-slip 4WD, and fully locked 4WD modes without ever letting go of the bars. Premium features include a factory-installed Warn VRX 25 winch, 27-inch Maxxis Zilla tires on aluminum wheels, 11.8 inches of ground clearance, four-wheel hydraulic disc brakes, preload-adjustable shocks, and electric power steering. The Kodiak 700 EPS SE is every bit as capable as the Grizzly 700, but at a more affordable price.Yamaha

Yamaha Kodiak 700 EPS SE

The Kodiak is so similar to the Grizzly that we occasionally have to look at the graphics to tell which is which. The differences are minor, but reduce the price by $1,200. To get to that number, Yamaha made small changes like going with a smaller tire and wheel package. The Grizzly got aggressive Maxxis Zilla tires in 27-inch size on 14-inch wheels, whereas the Kodiak 700 EPS SE received a middle-of-the-road 25-inch tire on 12-inch wheels. This change also gives the Kodiak an inch less ground clearance. On the flip side, the Kodiak shares the same engine, same highly responsive Ultramatic V-belt transmission, and gets the same On-Command three-way locking differential. Electric power steering is standard and it actually has a tighter turning radius than the Grizzly. Like the Grizzly, the Kodiak racks can handle up to 308 pounds of combined cargo, and it will tow 1,322 pounds. The Kodiak 700 EPS SE also comes with a factory-installed Warn VRX 25 winch. This Kodiak will hunt. MSRP: $10,299.

The 26-inch all-terrain tires are mounted on 14-inch cast aluminum wheels, bumping ground clearance up to 11.2 inches. The shocks include compression, rebound, and preload adjustment and brushless electric power steering is standard. Some of our favorite features include a factory-installed 3,000-pound winch, USB port, 12-volt power outlet for accessories, and hand guards. The racks will support 175 pounds combined, and a 2-inch standard receiver can tow up to 873 pounds. MSRP is 8,999 or $9,349 in camo.
