What can I put on my side-by-side to make it more enjoyable on the trail? Some things that come to mind are a radio with large speakers, lights, GPS and intercom just to get started. I found out really quickly that you will have to beef up the stator to find more power from the existing system, or else you'll eventually ruin the wiring in the stock machine. My fascination with really big lights set in multiples of two led to an eye-opening fact that I was on the brink of shutting the machine down by draining the battery and stator on our Prowler XTZ 1000. I had to find a way to build more amperage with what I had, and with a stroke of pure genius it had already been figured out for me.
UTV Inc. developed a bolt-on kit that uses the crank to spin a small, compact Denso alternator. This little gem puts out an additional 60 amps to the electrical system, or if you choose as we did, you can power an extra battery completely separate from the stock power reserve. The alternator has a built-in regulator and only has one wire that goes directly to the stock or reserve battery. The kit was easy to install, and just like that, all of my HID lights as well as my Lowrance GPS had the power they needed. The best part was that this entire setup is totally independent from the stock wiring, so there were no issues to deal with and no worries of messing up the Prowler's electrics. It's a must-have for the serious side-by-side adventurer with deep pockets.-Rick Sosebee
